The Mangere East Hawks emerged victorious in an 88-point thriller at Walter Massey Park as they edged Bay Roskill Vikings 46-42 in SAS Fox Memorial Premiership qualifying action Saturday.

Junior Pita and James Dowie both scored two tries in the win, which saw Mangere East overcome an early 12-0 deficit and secure a crucial win as the cut-off for the Fox Memorial Premiership and Championship fast approaches.

The Howick Hornets got back to winning ways after suffering back-to-back losses in the last fortnight, edging past a valiant Marist outfit 26-14.

The win comes thanks largely to the efforts of Roydon Gillett. The powerful centre scored a try and was a pillar of strength in defence, in a match which saw Howick lead 14-0 at half time.

The Otahuhu Leopards pushed the unbeaten Glenora Bears hard but fell 14-10 as the Beats held onto the Roope Rooster challenge trophy.

Trailing 10-0 at the break, Otahuhu fought back despite having a man in the bin for 10 minutes and were in the match right up until the final minute.

Papakura Sea Eagles found themselves on the wrong end of a lopsided scoreline as the suddenly in-form Mt Albert Lions thrashed the home side 78-22.

The Sea Eagles will almost certainly face the prospect of playing in the Fox Memorial Championship in the second half of the season.

The Pakuranga Jaguars overcame a half-time deficit to beat Manurewa 28-26 at home in a match that could have a major impact on who makes it through to the Fox Memorial Championship.

The Manukau Magpies all but secured themselves a spot in the Fox Memorial Championship with a 62-14 demolition of Waitemata.

Wing Jacob Masoe grabbed a hat-trick of tries, while fellow backline members Taunga Arama, Tamore Nati and Samuel Nati all crossed twice in Manukau’s big win.

The top-of-the-table Hibiscus Coast Raiders thumped Papatoetoe 88-6 after leading 52-0 at halftime.
