Kiwi Scott Dixon was caught out early in the Indianapolis 500 and finished a lowly 17th in the great race despite having the car to beat all the way through the build-up.

Starting from pole, Dixon was running in top three heading into the first round of pitstops.

He opted to stay out longer than competitors and it proved his undoing as Stefan Wilson’s pit entry crash forced a safety car and the closure of pitlane.

Dixon had to make an emergency stop as his car all but ran out of fuel and then his team struggled to get the car back underway as cars do that run out of fuel.

He lost a lap to the leaders and any realistic chance of winning the race.

Dixon saved fuel and managed to get himself back on the lead lap in the final stint but could muster only 17th and at least secure some championship points.

Brazilian Helio Castroneves won his fourth Indy 500 crown.
