Vandals have caused significant destruction to two local sporting organisations on the eve of returning to play with Counties Baseball Club and Papakura Cricket’s facilities damaged over the weekend.

Up to 25 volunteers spent most of Saturday working on Counties Baseball Club’s diamond at Karaka Sports Complex and had the facility in the best condition it has been as the club prepares to return to play in the coming weeks.

They trained on Sunday morning but sometime between 1pm and 8pm on Sunday, vandals got their cars into the facility and dug up the infield by doing donuts on the turf.

Earlier in the weekend vandals caused damage at Bruce Pulman Park in Takanini, smashing windows of the portacoms Papakura Cricket Club uses.

The club cricket season is set to get underway this weekend.

It is heart-breaking for these organisations, who rely so heavily on volunteers and community funding.

If anyone has any information about these criminal acts, they should contact the police immediately.
