Kiwi Scott Dixon has finished fifth at the second round of the Indycar championship on the streets of St Petersburg to move into second in the championship standings.

The reigning series champ and Manurewa product started from eighth and ran a quiet, trouble-free race to work his way up to fifth and finish nearly nine seconds behind the race winner Colton Herta.

Penske stars Joseph Newgarden and Simon Pagenaud completed the podium, while fellow Kiwi Scott McLaughlin finished 11th.

The championship heads to Texas Motor Speedway next week for the first two oval races of the season.
