Scott Dixon’s bid for a record seventh Indycar title has come up short after the Chip Ganassi racer finished 12th in the season finale at Laguna Seca in California.

It means Dixon finishes third in the 2022 championship behind Australian Will Power and his Penske teammate Josef Newgarden.

The Manurewa product started a lowly 16th on the grid, while Power was on pole and despite trying to find a strategy that could push him into contention, it wasn’t to be for Dixon.

“We ultimately just didn’t have the pace,” Dixon admitted. “It was a strange race – we tried everything we could. We tried to short stop, kinda kept coming out in traffic.

“We had one run there where we had clean air and had good pace there – as good as the leaders.

“Just frustrating we couldn’t bring what we needed to today

“A big congrats to Will Power – a tremendous year he ran this year and congratulations on his second championship.”

Dixon said he will return next season and be hungrier than ever for a seventh title.
