Liam Lawson has endured another tough weekend in Formula 2 action despite being in a strong position to challenge for a feature race win.

The Pukekohe racer finished fifth in the sprint race at Monza earlier in the weekend and had a front row start for Sunday night’s feature race.

Lawson made a strong start, leading at the first corner before back-to-back safety cars shook up the field.

The New Zealander had just past the pit entry when the second yellow came, and he had to complete a full lap while many of his rivals took the chance to pit.

He returned to the track in seventh spot and was taken out by Jiri Vips in a bizarre move that proved costly for Lawson.

His carlin team looked to use strategy to get back into the fight but he needed another safety car, which never eventuated.

Lawson lies seventh in the standings.
