It has been a mixed weekend for Supercars star Shane van Gisbergen at the latest round of the series in Perth as he claimed a race win but dropped points to title rival Brodie Kostecki.

The two Camaro racers put on a brilliant exhibition of attack and defense late in Saturday’s opening race of the weekend.

Van Gisbergen, chased Kostecki down on fresher tyres late but the series leader fought hard, blocking the Kiwi at every opportunity.

The Red Bull Ampol racer was constantly tapping the back of Kostecki’s car, without pushing him off the track, before finally sneaking down the inside with a little over a lap to go, to seal the victory.

Van Gisbergen started the second race of the weekend ninth on the grid and worked his way up to fifth but Kostecki followed Coca-Cola Racing teammate Will Brown home for a team one-two.

Starting in a lowly 21st on the grid, Van Gisbergen gambled on a rare four-stop strategy in the final race of the weekend and fought his way up to 12th.

Pukekohe’s Matthew Payne finished sixth, ninth and 18th across the weekend in an impressive showing.

Kostecki finished third and holds a 100-point advantage over Chaz Mostert in the standings with Van Gisbergen a further 36 points adrift in third.

Payne occupies 12th spot on the ladder.
