Weymouth picked up an outright win over Papakura in the opening round of the W.H Taylor Shield two-day competition on Saturday.

Batting first in the modified two-day game, Weymouth scored 153 all out.

The bowling of Tarun Singh (4-20) and Malav Brahmbhatt (4-37) did the damage for Papakura as they rolled Weymouth cheaply.

But the Papakura batting line-up proved no match as Karam Singh (4-27) and Varinder Singh (4-38) helped skittle the visitors for 123.

In the only other match played Pukekohe Metro made 283 batting first against Manukau City with Aue Parima and Reid Somani contributing 70 runs apiece.

Manukau City reached 172-4 off 40 overs before stumps were called and the match ruled a draw.

Sandeep Patel continued his golden summer with 51 while young opener Tayden Smit made 58.

The Southern Counties v Karaka match was postponed due to both sides having players sit out being COVID close contacts.

The plan is to reschedule the match later in the season.
