Manukau City produced their best performance of the season to secure a much-needed Duthie Cup win over Karaka at Karaka Sports Complex on Saturday.

The wicket at Karaka has produced plenty of runs all season and Manukau had no doubt on winning the toss that they would have a bat.

Following the loss of an early wicket, talented cousins Rikesh and Sandeep Patel came together and produced a good partnership to set the innings up.  The 22-year-old Sandeep Patel has already played for his country (Under 19 World Cup) and been in the 12 for the Northern Knights, while 16-year-old Rikesh is showing just as much promise as his big cousin and is highly regarded throughout the region.

Their respective scores of 84 and 60 set up the innings for Manukau and, at one stage, it looked like 300-plus was likely. However, excellent bowling from young off-spinner Mannu Sachdev, who picked up his second three-wicket bag in two weeks, with good support from the experienced seam attack, meant the innings finished on 250.

At 79/1 after 13 overs, Karaka looked in cruise control, but things change quickly in cricket and within half an hour the innings had imploded to 100/6.

Line and length pressure from all-rounder Dhruvit Patel, combined with a brilliant run-out of Luke Williamson from Nathan Halliday turned the screws, and though Karaka had a good rear-guard fight (led by Josh Shackleton), in the end the chase fell 40 runs short – a much needed and welcome win for the visitors.

The Pukekohe Metro juggernaut rolled on this week with a dominant performance over Papakura.

The home side won the toss on a good batting surface at Bruce Pulman Park and elected to have first hit but things quickly unravelled.

At 17/4 it looked like it could be a disaster but the Papakura middle order through Cory Dickson, Parmjit Singh and Usama Usama at least showed some mettle and helped the team battle through to a little over 100.

The younger Marconi (Leon) picked up three scalps, while spin duo of Cameron Hardwick and Kurt Barnes again proved both miserly and effective.

Against a line-up as strong as Pukekohe’s 112 was always going to be a struggle to defend, and so it proved. At 45/3 there was a faint glimmer of hope, but as he has done all season Thomas Parima came in and kept the scoreboard moving.

He was ably supported by 17-year-old Hamish Farrell who batted maturely for his 22 not out. Pukekohe cruised home in the 22nd over and maintain their unbeaten streak that has been going since early November.

The Senior A Manchester Shield competition has split into Championship and Plate groups and it was the Manukau City Rising Caps that upstaged the Manukau City Fearless XI – beating their club mates by 115 runs.

Pukekohe Metro Green enjoyed a narrow two wicket win over the Weymouth Mighty Kings while Papakura Turf Raiders snuck home against Waiuku with two wickets to spare as well.

In the plate section Papakura Heat’s Ranjith Raveendran dominated this week’s match of the round, scoring his maiden Senior A century to go with a bag of wickets.

On a good Tuakau batting strip the home team put up what looked to be a competitive score which was constructed through contributions throughout the order and a standout 56 not out from Brayden Riggs.

However, the Tuakau bowlers found Papakura on a hot day. Jithin Mohan struck at 200 for his 41, then once out there was no respite. Raveendran kept the foot on the pedal, supported ably by Rohan Reji, who struck four sixes and thirteen fours in what was a swashbuckling hundred. The target was reached in a scarcely believable 34 overs for the loss of only one wicket.

A great day and game to be involved in for all parties.

Karaka beat Manukau City Red by 95 runs while Weymouth beat United by 27 runs in the competition’s other fixtures.

Tuakau prepared for their day-night contest this coming week by moving to a share of the lead in Senior B action as they accounted for Manukau City Blue with a seven wicket win.

Weymouth Eastern Kings remained atop the standings (with Tuakau) thanks to a 113-run win over their Weymouth club mates.

Waiuku provided the upset of the weekend as they beat the previously in-form Glenbrook Maramarua by 45 runs.

Others to enjoy wins were United Marauders (v Karaka), Papakura Blue (v Papakura White) while the Manukau Punjab Lions v Pukekohe Metro game was abandoned.

Manukau City Red kept top spot in the T20 competition with a two-wicket win over Pohutukawa Coast while Weymouth Hardly Athletic remain second thanks to a five wicket win over the Weymouth Grumpy Old Men side.

Pukekohe Metro Potato Peelers edged Mauku.
