Manukau City has a slight upper hand against Papakura after the opening day of their two-day W.H Taylor Shield match at War Memorial Park.

Tarun Singh’s 6/62 helped restrict the home side to 179 all out. Alastair Vermeulen (49) and James Naylor (33) the only scorers of note for Manukau City.

But the Manukau City bowlers got their side back in control by bowling Papakura out for 178, to narrowly claim first innings points.

Nathan Halliday picked up 3/56 for the home side.

Batting first at Karaka Sports Complex, Karaka were bowled out for 280 by Pukekohe Metro. Daniel Power scored exactly 100 for the home side while Adil Somani snared 6/74 in a terrific spell of bowling.

The visitors were 158/3 in replay with Matt Wilson’s 82 and Jono Keen’s 51 leading the way.

The Senior A grade switched to T20 mode over the weekend with all teams playing matches at Mountfort Park.

The Papakura Turf Raiders went two from two in Pool 1 as they beat Weymouth by 105 runs on the back of a phenomenal century from opener Kamal Deep Deep. His 108 came off 26 balls and featured 11 fours and nine sixes.

Nikhil Verma had a strong all-round game as well, contributing 45 with the bat before taking four Weymouth wickets.

The Turf Raiders then beat Waiuku by forfeit.

An unbeaten 77 by Parminder Singh helped Pukekohe Metro Gold chase down Manukau City Red’s 162/8 with more than two overs and six wickets to spare.

The Manukau side bounced back in their second match of the day however as they restricted Weymouth to 122/9 before reaching their target with the loss of only one wicket.

In Pool 2 the Manukau City Rising Caps continued their strong run of form as they collected a pair of wins. Their first came over Tuakau after posting 189/9 off their 20 overs. They bowled Tuakau out for 131.

Aaron Pyne collected a hat-trick for Tuakau and finished with figures of 3/6.

The Rising Caps then posed 200/5 against United with opener Yadvinder Singh powering the innings with 67 off just 36 balls. United came up 45 runs short in their chase.

The Weymouth Mighty Kings chased down Papakura Heat’s 195/7 with three overs and seven wickets to spare. Gurjant Singh’s 77 off 46 helped the Mighty Kings to beat Tuakau by four wickets in their second match of the day.

Glenbrook Maramarua made up for their day-night loss to Tuakau in January with a comprehensive nine wicket demolition of their old rivals in Senior B Cup action.

Glenbrook Maramarua opening bowlers Todd Williams (4/5) and Aaron Denyer (3/24) had Tuakau in all sorts of trouble after the visitors opted to bat first and bowled them out for just 100.

Martin Denyer’s unbeaten 63 saw the home side chase down the target in just the 20th over.

Weymouth Eastern Kings remained top of the standings after racking up 284 batting first against Manukau City Punjab Lions. Jagtar Singh (64) and Mayank Sood (51) leading the way. Manukau City lost early wickets and were never really in the hunt despite 54 from Sukhjinder Singh.

Papakura Blue collected a 54-run win over Weymouth to keep touch with top two sides. Batting first they made 209 before restricting Weymouth to 155.

In the plate section Pukekohe Metro moved to 2-0 with a 44-run win over Papakura White. United moved to second with a 28-run win against Karaka and Waiuku enjoyed an eight-wicket win over Manukau City Blue.
