Northern Spirit and Counites Manukau product Brooke Halliday scored a maiden international half century as the White Ferns were downed by England in the first match of the series at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

Batting at number seven in the order, Halliday entered the game with the home side in trouble at 104/5. While wickets continued to fall around her, the Manukau City junior calmly made her way to 50 off 54 balls, hitting five boundaries along the way.

She was run out to end the innings and had done enough to give her side an outside chance of defending a low total of 178.

But England made short work of the run chase, reaching the target two down and with more than 16 overs up their sleeves.

Halliday bowled two cheap overs to complete a memorable debut – a bright spark in an otherwise disappointing day for the home team.
