Counties Baseball right-handed pitcher Taylor Irwin is the second player signed to the Auckland Tuatara Pathways program for the 2022-23 season.

The 18-year-old has impressed as an age-group international player for New Zealand while playing terrific baseball for his Counties club in the Auckland Baseball competition.

He was named Counties Baseball overall Player of the Season in 2020-21 and helped his club come third at the Baseball New Zealand National Club Championships.

A work-horse starter with good command, Irwin projects to be a long-term New Zealand Diamondblacks and Auckland Tuatara starter.

“It is great to be given this opportunity and I can’t wait to get stuck in,” Irwin said.

“Playing for the Tuatara in the Australian Baseball League is a massive goal of mine and something I am determined to work hard to achieve.

“I thank the Auckland Tuatara and Baseball New Zealand coaches for having faith in me and I would also like to thank my club Counties Baseball for everything they have done for me.”

Auckland Tuatara chief executive Regan Wood said Irwin was a player they have kept an eye on for some time.

“Taylor has been a standout player at the various age groups as he has made his way through, and we think he is someone that can really star for us in the years ahead.” Wood said.

“He has the chance with the Auckland Tuatara Pathways program to accelerate that development and we wish him well.”

Irwin is the second player signed to the Auckland Tuatara Pathways program, following last week’s signing of infielder Tyrone Boaler.

The Auckland Tuatara will continue to add players to the Pathways program between now and the start of April when the final roster spots will be confirmed.
