A combined Counties side has finished fourth in the inaugural Jim Borchert Memorial Baseball tournament in Auckland over the weekend.

The season-opening event at Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga was run by Counties Baseball’s Mark Irwin, with the tournament being played in memory of a pioneer of the sport in New Zealand.

Jim Borchert was instrumental in baseball taking off in New Zealand in the late 1980s and 1990s and his son Matt helped set up Counties Baseball in more recent times.

The Counties side, using a couple of players from Orewa and HP, proved competitive but ultimately finished fourth, having lost the third-fourth playoff match against Howick Pakuranga on Sunday.

New Zealand Diamondblacks representative Tairea Thompson impressed for Counties and will play for the club this season.

The Auckland Baseball Association competition gets underway this weekend where Counties will be one of eight premier teams vying for the trophy.

They open their campaign against Bayside Wolves, who won the Jim Borchert Memorial tournament, at Karaka Sports Complex from 12.30pm on Sunday.

Counties Baseball will enter teams in the Men’s Premier, Big League (U19), Senior League (U16) and Intermediate (U13) grades this season.
