Taylor Irwin claimed the Jim Borchert Memorial Trophy at the Counties Baseball club’s most valuable player for the 2020-21 season at the club’s annual awards evening on Sunday.

Irwin was also named Club Pitcher of the Year, Premier team’s Cy Young (best pitcher) winner and 19U MVP on the back of another superb season.

The right-hander has established himself as one of the country’s brightest young prospects.

Catcher Tairea Thompson also had a big night as he took out the Club Defensive Player of the Year and the Premier team’s MVP and Golden Glove winner.

16U player Tipene Kennedy was named Club Offensive Player of the Year and took out the 16U MVP and Silver Slugger awards.

Raelene Bishop took out the Club Person of the Year as a volunteer.

All grades made the ABA playoffs with the 19U side taking second place having finished second in the regular season and had the final washed out.

The Premier side had the most number of wins since the club first entered the grade six years ago and placed third at the United Airlines Baseball New Zealand National Club Championships.
