Pukekohe’s Matthew Payne has been left wondering what might have been at the inaugural Supercars round in Taupo over the weekend.

The talented racer had plenty of pace, securing the fastest time in qualifying for Saturday’s race before a downpour during the shoot out ruined any chance he had of pole position.

He went on to secure pole for Sunday’s race but took away a 13th and a fourth in the two races.

Saturday’s race was marred by bad weather and a stack of incidents, including a couple involving Payne.

A five second penalty applied post-race dropped the Penrite Racing driver to 13th.

Payne battled at the front of the field throughout Sunday’s race but didn’t have the pace of the two Red Bull Ampol cars and ultimately settled for fourth.

He leaves Taupo, fifth in the standings.
