Manurewa’s Scott Dixon has won the latest round of the Indycar series at Long Beach in California after yet another superb drive.

Dixon implemented a fuel save strategy he has become famous for, holding off a charging Colton Herta in the final stages to secure his first victory of the season and 57th of his glittering career.

“That was tough; that was really tough,” Dixon said. “Honestly, I didn’t think we were going to make it, and they kept giving me a (fuel) number, and it just wasn’t getting … I was close but not enough. Luckily, we were on the safe side there.”

Starting eighth, Dixon was one of a number of cars that pitted on lap 15 during the only caution of the race.

It meant he would have to drive to a fuel number and conserve in the final stint as those around him had freedom to push hard.

Using a mixture of saving and smartly timed push to pass activations, Dixon fended off his rivals and saved enough fuel to win the race.
