Manukau’s Shane van Gisbergen has finished an impressive third in his second NASCAR Xfinity Series race and only his fourth oval race in Atlanta on Sunday.

Van Gisbergen, the three-time Supercars champion and three-time Bathurst 1000 winner, enjoyed a trouble-free run in his second race in the series, and made the best of a bold fuel move late in the race.

His Kaulig Racing team opted to bring him into the pits for a splash of fuel in a late caution while others stayed out and ran dry.

Earlier, Van Gisbergen dropped from 13th to 18th on the opening lap before working his way into the lead pack through the majority of the race.

It backs up his 12th place finish in the season opener on Tuesday.
