Pukekohe teenager Billy Frazer found himself in one of those sink or swim moments last weekend on the streets of St Petersburg and he came through the test with flying colours.

Frazer finished a credible fourth and 12th in his two USF2000 races as parr of the Indycar weekend at St Petersburg – his first time ever racing on a street circuit.

“It was the most intense weekend of racing I have ever done,” Frazer told Velocity News. “I had one 30-minute practice before two qualifying sessions on the same day.

“Plus, there was a red flag in just about every session. So, I only did about six laps during practice before I had to qualify, and I still hadn’t fully learnt the track.

“But street racing is awesome. The walls were the biggest thing for me, as they were something I had never experienced before.

“To maximise your lap time, you have to get right up and close with the wall. At first, I was a bit hesitant, but I soon got more confident and was able to push harder.

“The car actually changes note as you get closer to the wall and the whole thing is just incredible.”

Frazer lies eighth in the championship and is the second highest placed rookie.
