Pukekohe driver Matthew Payne will race in the Super 2 Supercars development series next year it has been confirmed.

The impressive youngster, who made a stunning switch from karts to circuit racing over the past 12 months had been tipped to potentially replace the departing Andre Heimgartner at Kelly Grove Racing but instead will race for the team’s Super 2 outfit.

“[Payne] will continue his development within the team, working hand in hand with the main game squad and acting as a sponge to learn from the experience we have within the team,” team boss Stephen Grove confirmed.

Payne turned heads as he claimed the abbreviated Toyota Racing Series championship last summer in his first foray into circuit racing, beating some of the country’s best talent in the process.

“[Super2] will give me the flexibility to compete in further endurance racing formats and advance my preparation for main game with Grove Racing in 2023,” Payne said.

“I feel that I am as prepared as I could be to compete for race wins and podiums.”

He race a Nissan Altima in the Super 2 Championship, which starts in Newcastle in March.
