Local motorsport stars Shane van Gisbergen and Liam Lawson have been nominated for NZ’s Favourite Sporting Moment of 2023 at the Halberg Awards.

Van Gisbergen is a finalist for his stunning NASCAR series debut in which he won on the streets of Chicago in a famous performance. In doing so, he became the first person to win on debut in 60 years.

Lawson, who became just the 10th New Zealander to compete in Formula 1, is a finalist for his stunning point-scoring finish at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Van Gisbergen is a finalist in the Sportsman of the Year category while Lawson was controversially not even nominated despite his phenomenal achievements.

Van Gisbergen, who hails from Manukau, is set to compete fulltime in NASCAR in 2024 after exiting Supercars last year.

Pukekohe’s Lawson will spend 2024 as a reserve driver for Red Bull although he has been widely tipped for a fulltime drive in the near future.
