Pukekohe’s Liam Lawson has qualified ninth in his maiden Formula 2 World Championship qualifying session that will see him start from the front row in tonight’s first sprint race in Bahrain.

The 19-year-old fired himself into the top 10 right at the end of the qualifying session for Sunday’s feature race.

With the sprint race running a reverse top 10 grid, Lawson will start his rookie race in Formula 2 – the feeder series to Formula 1 – from the front row.

Fellow Kiwi Marcus Armstrong could only muster 14th and he will start both races from that position.

Two sprint races will be staged tonight -the first starting at 11.25 pm NZT.

The second race, featuring a reverse top-10 of the finishing order in race one, will start at 5.40 am. Both races are live on Spark Sport.
