Right-handed starter Taylor Irwin pitched an absolute gem to lead Counties Baseball to a 2-0 win over the North Shore Guardians in Auckland Baseball Association action on Sunday.

Irwin, signed to the Auckland Tuatara Pathways program, threw a complete game for the home side, recording a whopping 15 strike outs and conceding just two hits in a majestical display.

Backed up with a solid fielding effort by his Counties teammates, Irwin kept the North Shore line-up in check throughout to ensure his side won for the fourth time in five matches.

Manager Mark Irwin rated it the best performance of the season so far.

“Without a doubt. That one went down really well – it was a fight all the way, we kept them clean for seven innings and we fought hard. We put the runs on when we needed them – I would have liked some more runs but I will take that W every day,” he said.

Irwin was delighted with son Taylor’s performance on the mound.

“He certainly shone today and I think he is starting to get into his rhythm, his groove has come back and I think he is throwing with some good pace at the moment too,” Irwin senior said.
