Two significant achievements by local sportsman in the past couple of weeks has got us thinking – what is the bigger achievement?

Liam Lawson became just the 10th New Zealander ever and only the second in the past 30 years to compete in a Formula 1 race when he made his debut over the weekend as a replacement for the injured Daniel Ricciardo.

Many feel it was only a moment of when he would be given a fulltime drive after impressing in feeder series over the past few years.

The ex-Pukekohe High School student did an admirable job piloting his AlphaTauri car to 13th in treacherous conditions at the Dutch Grand Prix having started off the back of the grid.

Reigning Counties Manukau Steelers player of the year Cam Roigard has enjoyed a meteoric rise this year, which culminated in the halfback scoring a brilliant try against South Africa over the weekend.

Named to the All Blacks for the first time this year, Roigard could be a secret weapon off the bench for coach Ian Foster having won his spot with terrific form during Super Rugby Pacific with the Hurricanes.

Rugby is our national game and representing the All Blacks has long been viewed as the sporting pinnacle for Kiwi athletes.

But Formula 1 is one of the most watched sporting competitions on the planet and Lawson’s appearance adds another chapter to our proud history in the sport – (Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme etc).

Both achievements are significant, and both deserve to be celebrated but we thought it might be a fun exercise to see which one resonates more with our readers.
