It has been a promising but costly weekend for Kiwi race car star Shane van Gisbergen at the NASCAR Circuit of Americas round.

A post-race penalty robbed the Manukau City racer of a second place finish in the NASCAR Xfinity Series on Sunday.

Van Gisbergen impressed as he took the chequered flag in second place for what would have been an outstanding result.

But a post-race penalty of 30 seconds was imposed on the three-time Supercars champion for cutting the limits of the race track.

It meant he dropped to 27th as a result.

Van Gisbergen took the punishment on the chin and was upbeat about his race on social media after.

“Crazy race today. It got better and better as the day went on, had some awesome battles! The race just went ballistic at the last green and white chequers, just couldn’t quite pull it off,” he said.

It didn’t get better on Monday in the Bathurst winner’s first NASCAR Cup race of the year.

Running well in contention early in the race, Van Gisbergen was penalised for speeding in pit lane and served a drive through penalty, dropping him to 31st.

He worked his way back to just outside the top 10 before losing first gear, which really hurt his chances in the dying stages.

Van Gisbergen finished the race in 21st.
