Local Indycar star Scott Dixon recovered from an early race mechanical drama to finish sixth in the Indianapolis 500 on Monday morning.

Dixon’s race unravelled when he reported a horrible shudder coming from the left rear of his Chip Ganassi car and was forced to pit early when he started dropping significant time as a result of the issue.

He recovered to get himself back inside the top 10 during the latter stages of the race, only for three late red flag incidents to thwart much of the momentum he had created.

American Josef Newgarden snatched the lead on the final re-start and took the chequered flag ahead of Dixon’s teammate Marcus Ericsson.

Fellow Kiwi Scott McLaughlin finished 14th.

Dixon is fifth in the standings – 51 points adrift of leader Alex Palou.
