Pukekohe driver Liam Lawson has enjoyed a strong weekend competing in the German DTM series, picking up a pair of podium places.

Lawson, signed with Red Bull and competing in the Formula 2 Championship as well, collected two second place finishes from his weekend at the Lausitzring.

Overnight he started from second but jumped to the lead on the opening lap and controlled the race through the first stint.

A stall on his pit exit saw him give up a couple of spots but he did will to maintain throughout the race. Kelvin van der Linde had a mechanical issue and was forced to stop, giving Lawson back second place and the Kiwi was able to bank valuable points.

“At the start when I got the lead, I thought we could possibly win,” Lawson said.

“I knew that the start was the only opportunity to get to the lead. I knew both Philip [Ellis] and I had all that extra weight, so I tried.

“Lucky Kelvin [van der Linde] had the issue and from then on for about 20 laps I was just defending for my life. Happy with the points,” Lawson said.

Lawson is second in the championship standings, four points behind the leader.
