Two drivers from the Counties Manukau region have been ranked in renowned motorsport magazine Autosport’s annual list of the top 50 drivers of the year.

Indycar champion Scott Dixon came in eighth on the that included five New Zealanders overall.

Manurewa product Dixon won his sixth Indycar championship in the COVID-affected season and continued to move his way up the all-time records book. He is now just one championship behind the legendary AJ Foyt for the most career championships while he ranks third all-time in race wins with 50 – two behind Mario Andretti and 17 behind Foyt.

Manukau’s Shane van Gisbergen was ranked 47th after winning a maiden Bathurst 1000 title as well as his victory at the Battle of Jacks Ridge rally sprint.

Supercars champion for the third year running Scott McLaughlin was 13th in the rankings while Formula E star Mitch Evans ranked 20th and Super Formula drive Nick Cassidy was 38th.

McLaughlin will join Dixon in Indycars next season while Van Gisbergen is set to line up and next month’s New Zealand Grand Prix at Hampton Downs before going on to another Supercars season with Red Bull Ampol Racing.
