Bathurst winner and Counties Manukau local Shane van Gisbergen will compete in a number of speedway events this summer including some of the biggest races on the calendar.

The Red Bull Holden Racing star, who won the 2020 Bathurst 1000, will drive a midget in the International Midget Grand Slam Series at Western Springs and will see him compete on Boxing Day as well as the 50-lap event on January 4.

Van Gisbergen will drive the United Truck Parts-owned midget that was raced by NASCAR star Christopher Bell last summer.

Renowned for an incredible ability to race just about anything with wheels, Van Gisbergen showed off his versatility by winning the Battle of Jacks Ridge last week when he upstaged New Zealand’s best rally drivers to be crowned champion.

The 31-year-old competed in speedway racing as a youngster before embarking on his successful Supercars career.

He returned to dirt with an appearance at Baypark and finished in the top 10.

“We lost the second race with a puncture, so we were kind of a race behind,” van Gisbergen said.

“The races are short. I was just warming up and it was all over. It was only a three-minute race and normally I’m used to an hour and a half.”
