Supercars star Shane van Gisbergen has officially been crowned the 2022 series champion after the conclusion of the final round of the championship over the weekend.
The Manukau City product was already confirmed as champion having taken an unassailable lead into the final round on the streets of Adelaide and put on an epic celebration burn out after crossing the finish line.
While he endured a tough weekend that saw him crash out of contention with a rare error in Saturday’s race, Van Gisbergen looked set for a podium finish at worst in the latter stages of Sunday’s finale before he was handed a controversial drive through penalty.
The Red Bull Ampol racer was adjudged to have gained an overlap prior to the apex of the final corner under a safety car re-start and was forced to pit, ending his chances of a race win.
It is Van Gisbergen’s third career title and his second on the trot.
