Shane van Gisbergen’s title ambitions have come to crashing halt after he was caught up in an opening lap melee in Saturday’s race in Adelaide.

The Red Bull Ampol racer had nowhere to go after a car in front hit the wall and was left prone in the Manukau City racer’s way.

The damage sustained put him out of contention and meant that championship leader Brodie Kostecki only needed to finish the race to become the 2023 champion.

He ultimately finished sixth.

Van Gisbergen, who will move to the United States next year, will contest his final Supercars race on Sunday. He finishes this part of his career with three championships, three Bathurst crowns and is the fourth most successful driver in the category’s history with 81 race wins.
