New Zealand will not host a round of the Supercars Championship this season after another rejig to the Covid-19 affected schedule.

The series had included a Kiwi round in January when they announced their first draft of a 2020 season calendar but that included an extension that took the series into 2021.

A decision has been made to shorten the season and to have the championship wrapped up by early December and that has meant the need to cull some events.

The Auckland round – set to be staged at either Pukekohe Park Raceway or Hampton Downs, is one of the casualties along with a second sprint round at Bathurst and a round at The Bend in South Australia.

“When the draft calendar was released four weeks ago, our primary objective was to ensure we returned to racing as soon as possible,” Supercars boss Sean Seamer said.

“This allowed us to put a stake in the ground and ensure we returned to the track quickly following the Covid-19 shutdown.

“The calendar announced in May was based on the best information we had at the time.

“With an eye on 2021, teams and broadcast partners have agreed it is in all parties’ best interests commercially and competitively to finish this year’s campaign in December and start the new season in the New Year.”

It is expected that the series will return to New Zealand in 2021.

The final round of the 2020 Championship will at Sydney Motorsport Park on December 12-13.
