Local racer Shane van Gisbergen has finished his debut race in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series in 12th place after an adventurous day.

Bad weather pushed the race back a day and then delayed the start again on Tuesday but was eventually held at the Daytona Raceway.

Van Gisbergen survived three separate incidents that saw him twice fall off the lead lap before fighting his way back to finish a respectable 12th.

He made a spectacular save after crossing the start/finish line sideways and managed to avoid a collision.

“That was another wild race,” Van Gisbergen posted on social media. “Got some good momentum going, really enjoyed the flow of it all and learnt a lot. Got involved in other people’s messes but made my own mistake at the end, misjudged the side draft and spun out the 27 trying to pull into line. Sorry to him!

“Other than that it was an awesome job by our WeatherTech Team Chevy crew to keep us in the fight, 12th after all of that is pretty cool!”

The three-time Supercars champion is next in action on Sunday when the series moves to Atlanta Motor Speedway.
