The softball season is set to be delayed with the first half of the season likely to be wiped out due to the current COVID Alert Level restrictions.

Pukekohe Softball Club is resigned to starting their season in January after the government announced the structure in which the region would return to normal activity as the population becomes vaccinated.

A post on the club’s Facebook page highlighted the work the club has been doing while locked down.

“At this time of the year we’re usually emailing club members with event dates such as first game days for the different softball grades or team musters but the current level restrictions effectively cancelled all of the events that would usually be held ahead of the season starting,” the post read.

“This year we’ve missed out on our Registration Day, our Tee Ball Muster and Coaches Night. We were also planning a senior coaches and managers meeting again this season to welcome new teams and thrash out the competition details.

“The committee have worked really hard all autumn/winter to secure new sponsorship and buy new kit and gear for all of our Junior teams, including our tee ball players. It’s a year-round job for us and we’re devastated with the impact recent events have had on our pre-season activities.

“We’ll be packing a lot into whatever season we’re able to have this year. We are tantalisingly close to an alert level change but we have to obviously abide by the rules and guidance like everyone else. The last thing we want to be responsible for is an outbreak of the virus that puts any of our softball community at risk.”

During lockdown the committee and volunteers have been completing preparation work on the three main diamonds as well as putting up fence.
