Swimming Counties Manukau is no more with the region’s clubs moving to either north to Auckland or south to Waikato after the disestablishment last week.

Papatoetoe, Manurewa, Papakura, Pukekohe and Fulton clubs have all opted to head south and link up with Waikato while Howick Pakuranga chose to re-align with Auckland.

Clubs have spent the past few weeks deciding which option worked better for them after the ongoing sustainability of Swimming Counties Manukau became impossible.

“It all came down to the fact the Counties region couldn’t be sustainable,” Pukekohe Swimming coach Tracy Adams told Counties Sports Hub.

“Finding volunteers and the financial side of it all just became too hard. Counties is a small region compared to the other regions.

“Counties put it to the clubs – keep going and eventually the organisation would be unable to continue and clubs would be forced to re-align or we could dissolve Counties and the clubs could choose where they want to go.

“Kudos to Counties for putting their hand up.”

Pukekohe Swimming Club held a special general meeting to vote after considering all options and the vote went overwhelmingly in favour of a move to the Waikato.

“It made sense for us,” Adams said. “Not only are we right on the border anyway we thought Waikato would provide more for us.”

The move has already taken effect and will have no major impact on any of the club’s members, including those that were training out of a satellite centre at Mt Albert Grammar.

Pukekohe Swimming Club is considered one of the most successful clubs in the country.
