Te Kauwhata’s Brooke Donoghue has won a silver medal in the women’s double scull at the Tokyo Olympic Games alongside teammate Hannah Osborne.

The pair were beaten to the gold medal by the Romanian crew, who won the final with an Olympic record of six minutes and 41.03 second.

The Kiwis separated themselves from the chasing pack in the final quarter of the race to take second 3.79s behind the Romanians but over a second clear of the third-placed boat from the Netherlands.

“I’m really overwhelmed,” Donoghue told Sky Sport. “We had an awesome race and I’m stoked to win a medal.

“I’ve been thinking about this moment every day for the past two years and even to put it longer than that – every session for the past 11 years. It’s just huge and to finally have it done it’s crazy.”

Donoghue attended Te Kauwhata College and got into the sport via the Mercer Rowing Club.

She won a gold medal at the World Championships in the double scull in both 2017 and 2019 with then partner Olivia Loe.
