Pukekohe swimmer Andrew Jeffcoat has won gold in the 50m backstroke at Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Tuesday morning.

Jeffcoat led from start to finish and broke the New Zealand record in the process with a winning time of 24.65 seconds.

“I’m pretty happy to be here,” Jeffcoat said. “It’s awesome to be able to get up after the 100 the other day – I was pretty disappointed to only get fourth. So to be here and be able to step up, I’m very proud of myself.

“It’s something you dream of. You wake up every day for moments like that. There’s not a lot that I can say, really – you can’t really put it into words. It’s a special feeling. Probably the best feeling I’ve ever had. I’m just beyond grateful.”

It was the fifth gold medal by the Kiwis in the pool in the 2022 Games.
