Pukekohe teenager Matthew Payne has enjoyed a dominant day at Hampton Downs to take a pair of wins in the Castrol Toyota Racing Series.

The karting star has made a swift adjustment to circuit racing and dominated the field to record successive wins on Saturday and secure the Dorothy Smith Memorial Cup.

After earlier holding off Peter Vodanovich’s late charge, the 18-year-old Payne secured his maiden race win.

He then led all 30 laps of the feature race and beat home second-placed Kaleb Ngatoa by 14.780s.

Fellow Pukekohe racer Billy Frazer had a mixed day – he placed third in the opening race and was in prime position to score a stack of points in the feature race before he damaged his steering battling to hold onto his second place.

He ended up five laps adrift.

Payne has a commanding advantage in the three-round championship, which will conclude at Circuit Chris Amon in Manfeild in a fortnight.
