Counties Manukau have finished with a one win, three loss record at the Northern Brave T20 Smash held at Owen Delany Park in Taupo this week.

Featuring Counties Manukau, Northland, Bay of Plenty, Hamilton, Waikato Valley and an ND XI, the tournament consisted of five T20 matches across three days.

Counties Manukau got off to a good start, beating Bay of Plenty in the opening match on Sunday after chasing down the target of 164 with five wickets and one over to spare.

Weymouth spinner Rohit Kumar took advantage of his captain’s decision to bowl first, picking up 4-23 off his four overs.

Andrew Goodare, Cam Jerram and David Kingham also picked up a wicket.

An unbeaten half century from Sam Varcoe, coupled with Flynn McGregor-Sumpter’s 59 off 21 (which included six sixes) saw Brent Arnel’s side home.

Monday’s game against the ND XI was washed out with no play possible.

The later match against Waikato Valley came with reduced overs (14) and Counties Manukau ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

Waikato Valley made 131-8 after being sent into bat – the three CMCA spinners combining to take seven wickets with Kingham getting three and two each to Kumar and Rikesh Patel.

Jeet Raval top scored in the run chase with 48 but the rest couldn’t get going and they came up 26 runs short of the target.

Northland won the toss and batted first in Tuesday’s clash with Counties Manukau restricting them to 135-7 off their 20 overs.

Kumar and Kingham were in the wickets once again with a brace each while Jerram, Goodare and Patel had one each.

The batting performance was sub-standard however, as Northland ripped through the order to bowl CMCA for 50 with only Kumar and Sandeep Patel reaching double figures.

They then lost a high scoring affair against Hamilton in their final match – losing by 25 runs.

Hamilton was inserted and they scored 174-8. Sandeep Patel took 5-29 with the ball.

Patel added 63 with the bat in a terrific performance but Counties Manukau couldn’t reach the total.
