The Manukau Auto Centre Maramarua Clubmans Rally 2020 has been postponed due to the extension of government-imposed restrictions in Auckland.

A star-studded field including a number of leading New Zealand Rally Championship figures was set to tackle next week’s event in the Maramarua Forest with defending national champion Ben Hunt of Glenbrook Beach (Subaru), Pukekohe’s Dylan Turner (Audi), Brookby’s Jack Hawkeswood (Mazda) and Papakura’s Kinglsey Jones (Skoda) all set to feature.

The 72km-long rally was to be co-hosted by the South Auckland Car Club and Pukekohe Car Club.

A post on the Pukekohe Car Club Facebook page late on Monday confirmed that the event was postponed.

“While the event is technically in the Waikato the majority of helpers and a large amount of competitors will be from the Auckland region,” the post read. “With the maximum group number of 10 under level 2 for Auckland running until at least September 6th it makes it extremely difficult for us to ensure we can pull together a safe event for everyone. The last thing we want to do is become a super spreader event!!

“We will be endeavoring to secure another date in the future so watch this space.

“I’d just like to thank everyone involved with trying to get this event up and running, the organizing committee, our volunteers from Rally New Zealand and Ray Wilson have put in quite a few hours so thank you guys for all your hard work, hopefully we can pull it off in the future.”

The event was a key piece of build-up to the City of Auckland Rally and Battle of Jacks Ridge, that are set to be staged in November.
