Kiwi driver has finished fifth at this morning’s Indycar series race at Gateway Motor Speedway near St Louis to bank some more valuable points in his hunt for a sixth championship.

The 40-year-old Manurewa product backed up yesterday’s race win to secure yet another top five finish as the series saw a race finish under yellow for the second week running.

Dixon was unlucky to be unable to fight for a race win in the closing laps at last weekend’s Indianapolis 500 when a late crash forced the race to end in formation.

The Chip Ganassi racer’s closest title rival Josef Newgarden won the race to make a small gain in the championship but Dixon will need only to finish the remaining races to win a sixth title.

He has a 96-point lead over the American with as many as five races left in the season.

Patricio O’Ward finished second while veteran Australian Will Power was third.

The series could possibly run a double-header race at Mid-Ohio in a fortnight before three more races in October.
