Pukekohe Truter have claimed victory in the Counties Tennis Association Interclub Premier grade after beating Patumahoe Pascoes in a thrilling final.

Pukekohe’s Michael Truter and Tim Vaughan edged the Patumahoe combination of Sam Pascoe and Peter Schreuder 6-4 7-6 in a close-fought match that would prove pivotal.

With Pukekohe one rubber up, Craig Inger dispatched Schreuder in straight sets in the first singles match to secure Pukekohe the win and the premier title for the season.

Despite knowing the title was lost Pascoe meanwhile did not give up, coming back from one set down and 3:1 down to defeat Truter 1-6 6-3 6-4 giving Patumahoe the last premier singles win of the season.

In Grade 1 action Bombay proved too good for the Waiuku Steelers in a close tie. The singles matches were shared two apiece with Len Brennan and Eric O’Brien winning for Bombay and Ryan Crawford and Marty Foote picking up wins for Waiuku.

Brennan and Eddie Keene teamed up to win their doubles match for Bombay while Foote and Adam Hood claimed a doubles win for Waiuku.

It meant the tie was decided on overall games won, which went in favour of Bombay 61-59.

The same situation occurred in Grade 2 with Patumahoe edging Waiuku Knights on a count-back. The two sides split the singles matches two apiece (Ben Fausett and Jessica Nepia winning for Patumahoe and Nathan Campbell and Dave Bell winning for Waiuku) while doubles were shared one match each but Patumahoe got home 56-54 in total games won.

Pukekohe Tennisanity beat Pukekohe East Serverz also by count back in the Grade 3 final. Wins by Russ Clarke, Graham Duthie and Sharon Nelson in the singles set up the win but Pukekohe East fought back with Max Stening winning his singles match and then he combined with William Leger and the Cody Shortt and Logan McCort combination to take out both doubles contests.

Pukekohe won the tie 60-51 on games won.

Pukekohe East Racketeers’ Leif Cornu, Tom Migounoff and Kapish Kumar all won their singles matches while Cornu and Migounoff combined to win their doubles match to claim overall honours in Grade 4 against Patumahoe four games to two. Patumahoe’s Kate Shaw won her singles and combined with Scott Thompson to win their doubles.

Grade 5 saw Pukekohe East beat Papakura 4-2 on the back of singles wins from Sophie Stening, Alex Wheeler and Jackson Newman and a doubles victory from Wheeler and Newman.

Papakura’s number one Nanje Welman won her singles and combined with Owen Nuth to win their doubles.

Hunua beat Papakura 4-2 in Grade 6 thanks to singles wins by Fergus Hood and Hunter Corson and then wins in both doubles matches.

Grade 7 final was also a close match between Pukekohe’s Smash City and Bombay. Pukekohe came out on top four matches to two. Liam Pulling and Kate Cox won their doubles fixture for Pukekohe before both players and Angello Ventre all won their singles matches to confirm victory.

The Counties Tennis Association Interclub finals were possible thanks to Pukekohe Plaza.
