Manukau City’s Shane van Gisbergen will make his NASCAR Series Cup debut this weekend at Chicago.
The three-time Supercars champion will run a Trackhouse Racing car as part of Project 91 operation that has seen Formula 1 star Kimi Raikkonen also race the car in the series.
The 33-year-old Van Gisbergen completed a test at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Tuesday – his first time behind the wheel of a NASCAR.
“We had a pretty cool first day at Charlotte Motor Speedway,” Van Gisbergen said. “First time here. First time driving the NASCAR, it was awesome.”
“The car, well, the team did a really awesome job getting me comfortable and up to speed. I got all the right feelings in the car, and yeah, it feels comfortable.
“Similar in some ways to what I’m used to, but in other ways completely different.”
Van Gisbergen will compete in Chicago this weekend before racing back to Australia to tackle the next Supercars round next weekend on the streets of Townsville.
