Local driver Liam Lawson has enjoyed a superb weekend at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium with two good results in Formula 2 and a successful first practice in Formula 1.

The Pukekohe High School product won the Formula 2 sprint race on Sunday morning before adding third place in the feature race overnight for a solid haul of points in the feeder series to Formula 1.

His sprint race win included a brilliant start, in which he went from sixth to second on the opening corner.

He had a trouble-free stint in his first practice session behind the wheel of Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri for the one-hour session.

Lawson completed 14 laps around the famous circuit, without setting the world on fire with his times. But it will invaluable experience for the talented youngster, who is knocking on the door of a fulltime seat next season.
