The Spark Regional one-day cricket competition gets underway this weekend with local Counties Manukau sides taking on the best from Hamilton and Waikato Valley.

The competition took a break last summer with COVID restrictions in the Auckland region preventing games from being played.

The competition has expanded to 16 teams this year, split across two pools of eight.

Defending champions (from 2020-21) Pukekohe Metro head to Steele Park in Hamilton to face Melville in a Pool A clash.

The other two local sides in Pool A are also on the road with Southern Counties, making their Spark Cup debut, facing St Peters 1st XI at St Peters in Cambridge and Papakura taking on Hamilton Boys 1st XI at Hamilton Boys High.

Over in Pool B two local sides run into each other first up with Karaka hosting Weymouth at Karaka Sports Complex while Manukau City is at home to Te Awamutu at Mountfort Park.
