Papakura went agonisingly close to picking up their second win of the Spark Regional Competition after going down to Marist Suburbs at Bruce Pulman Park on Saturday.

The visitors won the toss and decided to bat on a good batting wicket.

Papakura opening bowler Money Singh Sekhon collected an early wicket before a large partnership saw Marist record a competitive total of 262/8.

Singh Sekhon and his teammates bowled well at the death to keep the target to an achievable level.

The Papakura run-chase started well and a big fourth wicket stand between Hayden Dickson and Vishal Abrol kept the home side up with the asking rate.

But wickets in the 35-45 over stage cost them. Mandeep Singh provided some good hitting in the final overs to give Papakura a shot but they ultimately fell just short.

Karaka posted an impressive 281/9 batting first against Morrinsville Piako.  Morrinsville had Karaka on the ropes early restricting them to 34/3 before a big fourth wicket partnership between Daniel Power (116) and Josh Shackleton (71).

The pair put on 185 together. Shackleton continues to grow his keeping and batting skills and is showing plenty of promise. Power has been excellent all season, but unfortunately for the club this was his last hit for a while as he heads overseas this week for work. A 100 was a fitting send off for the highly respected all-rounder.

Morrinsville made the target look easy in the end and a blazing century from first drop Glen De Jager allowed the home team to get the win in the 44th over. Former Palmerston North Boys High 1st X! player Trey Bidois was the best of the Karaka boys – his off-spin proving hard to get at.

Pukekohe Metro claimed an easy win as they skittled St Paul’s Collegiate for just 112.

Promising 20-year-old seamer Declan O’Brien (an old boy of Hamilton Boys – St Pauls’ local rivals) took the top off the St Pauls innings with a quality spell of pace bowling, and then the spin duo of Kurt Barnes and Cameron Hardwick showed their guile and nous as they applied the screws through the rest of the innings.

Club stalwart Barnes is a fantastic story – he suffered a serious pec/shoulder injury during team bonding exercises only a month ago that medical experts thought at the time may be season ending. But he has demonstrated his remarkable powers of recovery, and his return to peak fitness so quickly has lifted the spirits of the entire group.

The chase was over by 2pm as first Jono Keen (43), then the Parima brothers made it a simple exercise. The boys in green have a big three weeks ahead, as they will likely need wins in all their remaining games if they are to be a chance of making the final.

Manukau City picked up their first win of the season after they edged Matamata but it wasn’t straight forward and gave coach Mike Halliday some nervous moments.

With Matamata 93/3 in just 14 overs things looked ominous for Manukau, but the introduction of both Amen and Randeep Singh swiftly altered the course of the game. They picked up the last seven wickets in a hurry (with Amen throwing in a run out for good measure to cap his fine effort).

Manukau would have been confident at the innings break on what was a good War Memorial Park surface, but some accurate bowling and ill-disciplined batting meant things got a whole lot closer than they should have.

At 103/8 Matamata had gained ascendancy and were seeking the knockout blow, but cool heads from Jagat Kumar and Nathan Halliday at nine and 10 took the sting out of Matamatas tail and got the local boys home.

Match of the Round

Fresh from a famous win against the Weymouth Mighty Kings (Premier T20 runners up) the week before, the Papakura Turf Raiders approached this game in a confident mood, but in another example of what is turning out to be a very competitive Senior A season, Pukekohe Metro Gold have upset the apple cart with a hard-fought 12-run win at Bledisloe Park.

Pukekohe’s success stemmed from an explosive opening stand between Parminder Singh and Hasimran Singh. The Turf Raiders pulled things back with Puneet Latawa doing a good job at the death, but 143 was more than competitive.

The Turf Raiders chase started steadily, but wickets at key times kept the contest even and the Puke boys maintained their discipline to hold on for a big win that leaves them 2 for 2 in the T20 competition.

Pukekohe Metro CC Senior A Gold (143/10 – 19.4 overs) Parminder Singh 59(45), Harsimran Singh 32 (19), Puneet Latawa 3/28 beat Papakura CC Senior A Turf Raiders (131/6 – 20.0 overs) Sharan Nagra 29, Gurpreet Sidhu 2/13 by 12 runs.
