Local South Auckland stars Jason Matthews and Clayton Campbell Jr have helped the Auckland Tuatara baseball team qualify for the semi-finals of the Australian Baseball League.

The two cousins have enjoyed terrific seasons for the Tuatara.

Between them they have compiled 59 hits (30 for Matthews and 29 for Campbell) while Matthews has mashed five home runs and Campbell three. Campbell has driven in 15 runs while Matthews has 13 RBIs on the season.

Matthews came up with a walk-off sacrifice fly in Saturday’s game against the top-of-the-table Brisbane Bandits in the bottom of the 11th inning to help his side secure a finals appearance.

They take on Adelaide Giants in Adelaide in the semi-finals this weekend.

Both players will head back to the US in the coming weeks for spring training – Matthews is signed to the Chicago White Sox organisation while Campbell is with the Detroit Tigers.
