Defending Ford Futsal Superleague women’s champions Papakura City FC will be the only Northern Region side competing when the national competition begins in February.

Marvin Eakins’ side, who beat East Coast Bays AFC on penalties in last year’s final in November, will look to defend their crown when the competition returns to the February-April window.

It will feature teams from all regions and will see matches played in Auckland, Tauranga and Wellington.

Eakins has his eyes focused on only one result.

“We are targeting to win the competition,” he told Counties Sports Hub.

“Last year was a great accomplishment for our team and I’m very proud of what we did but the focus has already shifted to 2023.

“We start training at Bruce Pulman Park this week and we will work hard to be in the best possible shape for when the competition begins.”

Futsal Fern Maxine Cooper, who won the Golden Boot in the 2022 edition, looms as a key player for Eakins while there are a number of other Football Ferns in the side.

Shivy Anthony and Dani Bradley (gk) will both be important as will NZ U18 rep Emily Gillian and Cat Pretty will be important in the pivot position as well.
