Puni have claimed a pulsating golden point victory to win the Sid Marshall Shield after beating Waiuku 20-15 at Navigation Homes Stadium on Saturday.

Nothing separated the two teams through 80 minutes with the scores locked at 15-15 and the game went into extra time of five minutes each way.

With no further score during extra time, a 10-minute period of golden point was used to try and find a winner and Puni managed to score a try to win the game and send their supporters into raptures.

It marks a memorable season for the club, with their clubrooms getting a significant renovation and club having good playing numbers.

Patumahoe scored a big upset in the final of the Bob Chandler Cup, defeating top qualifiers Karaka 37-10 in the earlier game.

Karaka had got the better of Jamie Bain’s side through round robin play but Patumahoe got up for the big occasion and produced a brilliant performance when it counted most.
