Pukekohe High School have gone two from two on Wednesday at the Basketball New Zealand Secondary School National Championships in Palmerston North.

Despite the outstanding results, they finished in a three-way tie for second in Pool D and miss out on progressing to the championship bracket due to tie-breaker rules.

Instead, they will play in the 9th-16th bracket.

Jamie Reddish’s side hammered St Bede’s College 95-69 in their morning game on Wednesday to set up a thrilling final round.

Pukekohe High would need to beat Mt Roskill Grammar and rely on Napier Boys High losing their final round match to advance to the competition rounds.

Pukekohe did their part – they beat Mt Roskill 66-54 to improve to a 3-2 record in Pool D but Napier Boys beat St Bede’s. That meant Rotorua Boys, Napier Boys and Pukekohe High finished tied with identical records – Pukekohe High were the team to miss out on count back.

This is the first time in history that Pukekohe High has made the national championships.
