Following in the footsteps of some legendary local sportsman, Counties Heat star Arihiana Marino-Tauhinu will make history tonight against Scotland in Whangarei.

The Black Ferns halfback will captain her country in a World Cup match, carrying on the tradition of some our region’s finest products.

Legendary Counties Manukau rugby player Andy Dalton captained the All Blacks 17 times in test matches and was originally named to lead the inaugural All Blacks World Cup side in 1987.

More recently Kieran Read, who attended Rosehill College and played for Drury Rugby Club before going on to a professional career, led the national side 52 times in test matches

Former Black Caps cricketer John Wright, who resided and played much of his cricket in the region, captained New Zealand on 14 occasions in test matches.

Renowned netballer Sandra Edge was captain of the Silver Ferns during her illustrious career while Otara’s Ruben Wiki was a legendary captain of the Kiwis rugby league team.
